AAF Defund SEC Greenhouse Gas Rule Letter

February 26, 2024

February 26, 2024 Dear House Republicans: When you return from recess, you will be in session for just two days before parts of the federal government begin shutting down. As the top-line number of $1.7 trillion is now set, the real appropriations battle begins over so-called appropriations “riders.” We, as ardent supporters of American business, urge you to defund the rulemaking process for the SEC’s proposed Greenhouse Gas rule. The rule, officially known as “The Enhancement and Standardization of Climate-Related Disclosures for Investors,” would require publicly-traded companies to report the greenhouse gases released from their supply chains and their customers’ usage of the products. The rule creates a climate mandate that is almost impossible to comply with. This rule is projected to disproportionately impact U.S. manufacturing, construction, and energy industries. One estimate predicts that this rule will cost the United States $25 billion and 200,000 jobs a year. The American people simply cannot afford this woke climate rule. We certainly understand the current political reality in Washington, but by defunding this rulemaking process, you can deliver a win for every American. We strongly encourage you to defund the rulemaking process for the proposed rule “The Enhancement and Standardization of Climate-Related Disclosures for Investors” in upcoming appropriations bills.
