2026 Edwin Meese III Originalism Lecture: “The Future of Originalism”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last month, The Edwin Meese III Institute for the Rule of Law hosted Professor Sherif Girgis, of the University of Notre Dame Law School, as the 2026 Meese Originalism Lecturer, where he delivered a compelling address titled “The Future of Originalism.” Professor Girgis also received the Meese Originalism Award from the Meese Institute at Advancing American Freedom Foundation

In his address, Professor Girgis examined whether originalism — the judicial philosophy that constitutional interpretation should align with the Constitution’s meaning at ratification — can sustain the political and intellectual vitality it has gained over the past four decades.

The Meese Originalism Lecture Series honors former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III and his groundbreaking contributions to the development and promotion of originalist constitutional interpretation.
