Advancing American Freedom led a coalition of 33 other amici fighting for free speech, free association, and life in First Choice Women’s Resource Centers v. Platkin. After Matthew Platkin, Attorney General of New Jersey subpoenaed a massive amount of information about pro-life pregnancy center First Choice Women’s Resource Centers, including information relating to 5,000 donations, First Choice sued in federal court asserting their First Amendment rights to free speech and free association. This subpoena was a thinly veiled attempt to punish First Choice and threaten other pro-life pregnancy centers in New Jersey for their pro-life speech and services.
“The targeting of pro-life pregnancy centers in this case is unacceptable and yet it is unfortunately part of pattern of abuse of power directed at groups some State officials find objectionable,” said AAF General Counsel J. Marc Wheat. “No one should be persecuted by the State for seeking to protect women and the unborn from the evil of abortion. The Third Circuit should make clear that organizations like First Choice Women’s Resource Centers are free to do that important work without fear of retaliation.”
