Advancing American Freedom led a coalition of 24 other amici fighting for the right of parents to represent their children in court. In its amicus brief in Grizzell v. San Elijo Elementary School, AAF argued that a court rule preventing parents from representing their children pro se, meaning without a lawyer, infringes on the authority of parents to protect the interests of their children.
“Parents have both the right and the responsibility to protect their children’s needs and interests,” said AAF General Counsel J. Marc Wheat. “A parent’s ability to seek judicial aid to protect those interests should not depend on whether he or she can afford an attorney. The Supreme Court should take this case and reverse this lower court rule that infringes on parents’ ability to perform their fundamental responsibility of looking after the interests of their children.”
